Job Summary

The Director of Product Compliance will provide support to the Compliance team on defining and leading the product compliance function for the company.  iHerb sells over 50,000 products in its portfolio, including private-label and manufacturer-branded products, utilizing a network of fulfillment centers and a state-of-the-art e-commerce platform. The Director of Product Compliance is responsible for ensuring that third-party products meet all applicable legal, safety, and quality standards across the US and international markets.  The Director of Product Compliance will be responsible for developing and implementing robust compliance strategies, establishing compliance frameworks, and leading a team of professionals to ensure our products meet all regulatory requirements.

Job Expectations

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive global product compliance strategy aligned with the company’s business objectives and values
  • Stay up to date with relevant international regulations, standards, and industry best practices to ensure compliance practices are current and effective
  • Lead efforts to identify, interpret and assess global product compliance regulations, including but not limited to safety, quality, labeling, chemical restrictions, restricted substances, and environmental regulations
  • Ensure product compliance with applicable laws and regulations in all target markets
  • Implement processes to monitor and track changes in regulations and standards, and effectively communicate those changes to internal stakeholders
  • Implement and manage compliance programs to evaluate suppliers, manufacturers, and vendors for compliance with product safety and quality standards
  • Develop and deliver training programs to educate internal teams on product compliance obligations and best practices
  • Liaise with external stakeholders, such as regulatory authorities, industry associations, and certification bodies to stay informed on industry trends and regulatory changes
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including design, development, sourcing, production, and legal to integrate compliance requirements throughout the product development lifecycle
  • Foster a culture of compliance and accountability within the team and across the organization

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Required:

  • Knowledge and experience in 21 CFR regulations involving GMP, Food Contact, Indirect Food Contact, Cosmetics, FDA Dietary Supplement approval, and GRAS determinations.
  • Strong knowledge of 21 CFR Food Additive, Food Contact, Dietary Supplement, and Cosmetic Regulations
  • Good knowledge of Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) requirements and FSMA, including inspection and audit processes
  • Knowledge regarding GMP-Good Mfg. Practices and GDP-Good Documentation Practices.
  • Proficiency with SAP and strong Excel skills are required for data management, analysis, and reporting purposes.
  • Ability to work in a multinational/multicultural environment with strong global business acumen
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively present to all levels of an organization internally and externally and proactively work and cooperate with other departments, suppliers, and customers
  • Demonstrated success with being results and proactive solution-driven, with a strong ability to think critically to overcome potential business hurdles to complete tasks
  • Courageous, outgoing, analytical, disciplined, agile, and team-oriented
  • Willingness and ability to travel periodically if required
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience with Google Business Suite (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Forms) preferred

Experience Requirements:

Generally, the role requires a minimum of 10+ years of experience in Product Regulatory Compliance, preferably in food, nutraceuticals, supplements, cosmetics, or pharmaceutical products. Also, 3+ years of managing others in a matrix organizational structure. 

Education Requirements: 

Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Toxicology, or Food Science. Master’s degree is preferred.

Judgment/Reasoning Ability:  Able to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve problems quickly using sound judgment, poise, and diplomacy.  Ability to use judgment and reasoning skills and determine when to escalate issues, as required, in a timely manner.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a Team Member to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the Team Member is regularly required to talk and hear. The Team Member is frequently required to sit, walk, climb stairs, use hands and fingers, bend, stoop, and reach with hands and arms.  Reaching above shoulder height, below the waist, or lifting as required to file documents or store materials throughout the work day.  The Team Member may occasionally lift or move office products and supplies up to 25 pounds.  Proper lifting techniques are required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the role.
