Job Summary
The Sr. Manager, EU Product & Trade Compliance is a key member of iHerb’s global compliance team, based in the European Union (EU). This strategic role is responsible for refining, implementing, and managing iHerb’s product admissibility and trade compliance programs for the EU. This includes ensuring all products sold into the region meet stringent EU food, supplement, and cosmetic regulations, as well as managing all aspects of customs and trade compliance. The Sr. Manager will act as a primary subject matter expert and a point of contact for European regulatory authorities, ensuring compliant market access and growth.
Job Expectations
EU Product Compliance & Admissibility
- Serve as the subject matter expert on EU regulations for dietary supplements, foods, and cosmetics, including the Food Supplements Directive, Novel Foods Regulation (EU 2015/2283), and the Cosmetics Regulation (EC 1223/2009).
- Conduct detailed compliance reviews of product formulations and ingredient levels against EU and national member state requirements to ensure product admissibility.
- Oversee the compliance of all marketing claims, ensuring they align with the EU Health Claims Regulation (EC 1924/2006) and guidance from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
- Ensure product labels and information presented on the iHerb platform comply with the Food Information to Consumers (FIC) Regulation (EU 1169/2011), including allergen declarations.
- Manage product notification or registration requirements with national competent authorities where required.
- Establish business process and local compliance policies based on global compliance structure and corporate principles as well as applicable local laws and regulations.
EU Trade & Customs Compliance
- Own the end-to-end customs compliance process for the EU, acting as the primary point of contact for customs concerns and authorities.
- Oversee and audit the customs classification (HTS/CN codes), valuation, and country of origin determination for all products imported into the EU, ensuring alignment with the Union Customs Code (UCC) and TARIC database.
- Working in alignment with the Global Logistics team, to assist with customs programs such as the Import One-Stop Shop (IOSS) to ensure efficient VAT processing.
- Develop and manage relationships with EU regulators and freight forwarders, setting performance KPIs and conducting regular business reviews.
- Support the company’s country of origin solicitation program for EU vendors, validate supplier declarations, and ensure origin data is accurately maintained in SAP to support Free Trade Agreement qualifications.
Program Management & Strategy
- Establish and maintain business processes and local compliance policies based on iHerb’s global structure and applicable EU and national laws.
- Act as a strategic advisor to the business, translating complex regulatory changes into actionable guidance for Legal, Logistics, Marketing, and Product Development teams.
- Develop and deliver targeted compliance training to internal business partners on key EU regulatory topics.
- Lead internal investigations into compliance issues and manage corrective action plans to ensure timely remediation.
- Continuously monitor the regulatory landscape in the EU for changes that could impact the business, identifying areas for process improvement and drafting necessary process documents.
Required Qualifications
- Deep and current knowledge of the EU regulatory framework for food supplements, novel foods, and health claims (EFSA).
- Deep understanding of EU customs law, including tariff classification (HTS/CN), valuation, and country of origin.
- Proven experience managing compliance for consumer products across multiple EU member states.
- Fluent written and verbal English language skills.
- Based in the EU with the ability to manage compliance across all EU member states.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
- Excellent interpersonal skills to build trustworthy relationships with colleagues and business partners while maintaining a high degree of independence.
- Strong analytical and pragmatic problem-solving skills with the ability to manage complex issues and develop practical solutions.
- Experience managing projects and tracking progress through tools like Asana.
- Working knowledge of ERP systems (e.g., SAP) for managing trade data.
- Familiarity with broader compliance topics such as the FCPA, UK Bribery Act, and international sanctions is a plus.
Experience Requirements
- At least 5-7 years of experience working with relevant regulatory policies and laws in Europe. Experience in the EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) is a plus.
- Working experience in the Vitamin/Food & Beverage/Cosmetics/Pharmaceutical industry is highly preferred.
- Experience working in or supporting e-commerce businesses, especially with international product listings and digital marketing, is highly preferred.
Education Requirements
- Bachelors degree or practical legal or compliance experience
